Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini (1675-1741), The Martyrdom of St. Vitalis

Chiesa San Vidal, Venice, Italy

The painting faithfully follows the dénouement of Vitalis's passion. Deaf to the saint's Christian counsels, the judge Paulinus orders his men to take the saint away, throw him into a pit, and fill the pit with earth and stones.
